Laughing Gas – What is it and what does it do?

October 16, 2017

Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide) is a gas that has no colour, no odor and will not irritate.  It is breathed in through the nose causes a pleasurable feeling.

To begin, administration of laughing gas will result in an overall feeling of lightheadedness and then will cause a tingling sensation followed by a feeling of floating.  Some patients have also said that they get warm sensations and tingling up and down their arms and legs.

Laughing gas is an excellent option for patients that are nervous when visiting a dentist, especially if this nervousness causes anxiety.  The gas is very fast-acting and can reach the brain within 20 seconds, and patients will not feel pain after 2-3 minutes.  When the dentist finishes the procedure, and discontinues the administration of laughing gas, it wears off within 3-5 minutes and patients are able to carry on with their day, including being able to drive.

Laughing gas is also very safe to use by professionals.  There are very few side effects, a patient can not be allergic, and the gas does not have an adverse effect on internal organs, such as the brain, heart, liver and lungs.  It is also safe to use if a patient suffers from heart disease, liver disease, and diabetes.

The gas can be used with cleaning, root canals, tooth extraction, and fillings. Also it can be used with any ages
